Babel
Babel is another we felt we’d wasted our money on, and left us wondering why on earth the film had been deemed good enough to warrant a Golden Globe Award and seven (7!) Academy Award Nominations leaves me quite mystified. Plainly I’m out of step with current tastes.
While I understand completely this was to be a weaving of seemingly disparate stories, another Six Degrees of Separation, if you will, I found the two messages (guns are evil, and down with The West) to be more than a little heavy-handed. Cate Blanchet and Brad Pitt delivered good performances, but overall I felt the acting by the remainder wasn’t particularly stellar. There wasn’t anything remarkable about the cinematography. Certainly the story itself wasn’t particularly remarkable, or maybe I’m missing something. By the end of the film Gary and I looked at each other and went: “So what?”
Is it me, or has the film industry lost something?
