In Celebration of National Aboriginal Awareness Day
Just confirmed yesterday an engagement at the Bruce County Museum, in combination with their celebration of National Aboriginal Awareness Day, which is a cultural awareness initiative started in 1996 by Governor General Romeo LeBlanc.
The focus of National Aboriginal Awareness Day is to recognize the contributions of aboriginal peoples to Canada. Bruce County Museum’s celebration centres around the significant bands of the Ojibway of Saugeen, and Chippewa of Nawash, who will introduce guests to the meaning behind the circle of life, the eagle, drumming and dance. That event will take place Sunday, June 14, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
My participation will be as a lead-in to that event, taking place Saturday, June 13, 2009. I will be reading from And the Angels Sang and Shadow Song, to be followed by question and answer, and book signing.
Several of the short stories in the anthology, And the Angels Sang, deal with native culture, while the novel Shadow Song very much examines Ojibway society and their Midewiwin (medicine society).
