Candas Jane Dorsey to re-issue Black Wine with Five Rivers

In 1996 Tor Publishing released Candas Jane Dorsey’s novel, Black Wine. The novel went on to win the James Tiptree, JR Award, the IAFA William L. Crawford Award, and the Prix Aurora Award.
Black Wine received accolades from critical literary journals, peers and readers. Despite its acclaim, Black Wine slipped out of print.
Five Rivers is pleased to announce the rebirth of Black Wine. Scheduled for release mid 2013 in both trade paperback and eBook, the agreement marks our commitment to showcase new and established Canadian authors.
This utopian, archetypal story follows five generations of women–from the monumental, sadistic despot to her great-great-granddaughter working in a warehouse–through their travels away from and toward one another. Loves and deaths are passed through the generations, collected on their successive journeys, each restless character setting others in motion as she seeks freedom and kinship. Candas Jane Dorsey’s concise language is powerful, telling an intense story without emotional plateaus, only peaks and valleys, joy and grief. This is an involving, unsettling book. It is easily one of the best and most ambitious novels of 1996 and one that will provoke thought and conversation.
Candas Jane Dorsey’s oeuvre includes novels Black Wine and Paradigm of Earth (shortlisted for Sunburst and Spectrum Awards); short story collections Machine Sex and other stories (containing the Aurora Award-winning story Sleeping in a Box), Dark Earth Dreams, and Vanilla and other stories (winner of the WGA Short Fiction Award); four poetry books; several anthologies edited/co-edited, and stories, poems, reviews, critical essays, and rants in anthologies and magazines.
Eclectic in output and style, Dorsey has just completed a mystery novel, a young adult novel about an intersex teen, and has even been working on children’s picture book scripts.
She was editor/publisher for nine years of Canadian independent SF publisher Tesseract Books, and for 14 years of a literary press, The Books Collective. She teaches writing and speaks internationally on SF and other topics. She was founding president of SFCanada,the only Canadian professional writers’ organisation operating in both official languages. She works as a freelance writer, editor and communications consultant, and is an active arts and community advocate.
In addition to her literary honours she is the recipient of the Alberta Centennial GoldMedal, the City of Edmonton Achievement Award, the Todd Janes Pride Award, the Edmonton Police Service Human Rights Citation, and the YWCA Woman of the Year award.
