The Penelopiad, by Margaret Atwood, certainly isn’t what I expected. But, then, Margaret Atwood has a way of doing that, delivering the unexpected. Somehow she delivers in The Penelopiad not only a fascinating insight into Penelope’s version of the famous Homerian epic, but does so with cutting wit, almost vaudevillian asides, all the while disseminating little known archeological and historical background which is craftily woven into the fabric of the whole.
